Meet the Staff! – Olivia C

Have you ever been curious about who makes the handbound books BatCat Press produces?  As we go through the second half of our 2015 – 2016 year at BatCat Press, we’ll introduce you to all twelve of the staff members that work year-round on creating our beautiful journals and publications! We hope you enjoy!

Hey! It’s me! I’m Olivia C, and I write most of the posts for this blog, including all the Meet the Staff posts. I’m a senior, and this is my second year with BatCat Press. I worked a bit on the production of the publications the year before I joined, too (namely, Surviving and Poems in Which You Die).

NAME: Olivia C
AGE: 18
FAVORITE BOOK: Peter & Wendy, The Little White Bird (though I am also partial to a book on Epcot from  1982 that I found)
FAVORITE AUTHOR: J.M. Barrie
FAVORITE GENRE TO READ: Whatever’s funny!
FAVORITE GENRE TO WRITE: Creative non-fiction, short stories
OTHER INTERESTS: Ukuele, guitar, embroidery, crocheting, and Disney Parks. Mostly just Disney Parks. In particular, Wat Disney World, but they’re all pretty neat.

Rhyan and I reading submissions last year, back when we didn’t have the luxury of Submittable and had to print out all the manuscripts.

Just like everyone else I’ve introduced you to, I absolutely love BatCat.  I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities I’ve had or the skills I’ve learned, like bookbinding and how to write a proper email (or a superb blog post).

The haiku pin box I’m (very) proud of myself for making.

However, my absolute favorite thing that I get to do as a part of BatCat is going to events, but specifically AWP. I went last year in Minneapolis for the first time, and I’m so, so excited to go back this year!

AWP 2015; you can read my post about it here!

AWP is being held in Los Angeles this year (right by Disneyland — bonus!), and I’m really looking forward to meeting people and telling them about BatCat. That’s the coolest thing I do on Press; It’s weirdly easy to share the sense of community that our little staff has with outsiders. I think that’s what happens when you’re so passionate about something! Sharing my experience and explaining exactly what we are, both in person and through this blog, has been a great experience.

I could not be more grateful for my time with BatCat. This has been the most overwhelmingly positive experience, and just the best opportunity I’ve had in my high school career. I’m gonna miss it so, so much when I graduate in the spring!

Check back here next week!
