Meet the Staff! – Kira

Have you ever been curious about who makes the handbound books BatCat Press produces?  As we go through the second half of our 2015 – 2016 year at BatCat Press, we’ll introduce you to all twelve of the staff members that work year-round on creating our beautiful journals and publications! We hope you enjoy!

First up is Kira, a senior in her first official year with BatCat Press. She worked with us on our haiku pins and markets last year, before she became a full staff member, so she considers it a year and a half.

NAME: Kira
AGE: 17
FAVORITE BOOK: She screamed out of indecisiveness, then landed on The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
FAVORITE AUTHOR: Neil Gaiman
FAVORITE GENRE TO READ: Fiction, flash fiction, poetry, fun facts
FAVORITE GENRE TO WRITE: Poetry, creative non-fiction, flash fiction
OTHER INTERESTS: Drawing, painting, listening to music, sleeping, covering self in snow

She loves being on Press because she’s very crafty; she loves making our books, journals, garlands, pins and pinbooks, etc. “I really like the creative process,” she said. “I think that it’s a really cool craft, and it’s a new way of making things and expressing yourself.”

She’s really good at making our haiku pins, in particular. She writes a lot of haikus in her spare time (she has notebooks full of them!), so she’s always involved when it comes time to crank out more. Kira has already typed up dozens and dozens and dozens of lines with five and seven syllables this year alone, and she also helps make the pinbooks some haiku-lovers choose to put their haikus in.

“I particularly like selling things!” she added. “I really like actually going to events, and meeting people, and explaining who we were and what we do, and seeing their faces light up when they see something they like. I just really like meeting everyone!”

This year, she went to the Beaver County Bookfest, Frostburg Indie Lit Fest, and she’ll be going to AWP for the first time this spring! “I’m really excited to go to a bigger event,” she said, excitedly. “I’m also really excited to meet more people, and people who already know us. I’m really excited to sell publications, whether they’re old or new. I’m mostly just excited for the experience. I’ve never been a part of anything like this.”
