Meet the Staff – Julia

Have you ever been curious about who makes the hand-bound books BatCat Press produces?  This year, we’ll be introducing you to our four new staff members that work year-round on creating our beautiful journals and publications! We hope you enjoy!

NAME: Julia Aloi
AGE: 15
FAVORITE BOOK: StarGirl by Jerry Spinelli
FAVORITE AUTHOR: J.R.R. Tolkien
FAVORITE GENRE TO READ: Poetry
FAVORITE GENRE TO WRITE: Creative Nonfiction
OTHER INTERESTS:  Playing softball, volunteering at a library, and hanging out with friends.

Julia is BatCat’s youngest staff member, being only 15, but she’s not letting that get in her way.  She loves to read submissions and weigh in with her opinion. “It’s really nice reading all the different kinds of work we get,” says Julia. “I like how it exposes me to different writing styles and lets me improve my own.”

Julia has quickly found her own niche on BatCat, and while she’s not always the loudest, she does have a reputation for being trustworthy. “I’m pretty versatile and reliable,” Julia says. “I can get stuff done.”

Julia has only been to one event this year – Handmade Arcade – and she was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. “I thought I would be nervous, but I wasn’t. I just had a good time and bought some stuff.” Her favorite part of the whole day was working the Make Your Own Pin table. “Even if I kept stabbing myself,” she adds with a laugh. “Still really fun.”

Outside of BatCat, Julia spends her time volunteering at the library and doing makeup. She’s just as skillful with a makeup brush as she is with a bookbinding awl, and it shows. “It’s something I’ve been doing for four years,” she says.

Julia plans to go to college after BatCat, but she’s not sure where or for what. She’s got a couple more years to figure it out, and we’re glad that she’ll be spending them on the press.
