Kudryavka: Cosmodog Dreaming is a poetry collection by Craig Barker detailing the story of Laika, the first dog in space, and the narrator’s difficult relationship with his long-distance partner. The collection is intimate and starry-eyed—bringing the reader the dim details of Laika’s last days alive in space with expressive imagery and quiet humor, along with the struggles of a failing contemporary relationship here on Earth. The collection is split up into four books (Ground Zero, Preparation, Ascent, and Flight) to show Laika’s travels.

One of the highlights of Cosmodog is the pure variety offered within the pages—ranging from prose poetry to epistolary, there’s a style for every reader to enjoy. It is also one of BatCat’s more historically based titles, the story of Laika being world-renowned and heartbreaking.

Craig Barker is a writer and teacher from Blackburn, England who lived in Columbus, Georgia for a time during 2016. He is a graduate of both the University of Chichester and the University of East Anglia, the latter of which was where he received an MFA in Poetry. Kudryavka: Cosmodog is his first published collection. He has never had a dog, or been to space.
