Alexa joined BatCat Press because she thought it would be a very unique experience. “I’d never heard of something like BatCat, and I thought it was the coolest thing—the coolest opportunity.”

As a new member, she’s been particularly fond of learning how to bookbind. “Making things is really cool,” she said. “Plus, after you learn, just knowing it and having that skill—it’s really cool to be able to do that.”

She added that the environment the press sets up is a great space to learn in, as well, since you’re not expected to learn by yourself. “You can sit next to someone and say, ‘Hey, what’re you doing? Let me figure out how to do that, too’ and that’s really helpful.”

She also said that the press is very open to new ideas. At first, as a new member, she figured she wouldn’t get to have a big say or opinion in most matters, but she’s been welcomed to talk and share! “I’ve actually been asked personally what I think we should do,” she said. “There’s no hierarchy.”

She added, “There also aren’t intense expectations. Like, you don’t have to be able to make a book perfectly on your second try—that just doesn’t exist. It’s very welcoming, like, ‘Whatever you’re able to do, we want you to be able to do it here.'”

For next semester, Alexa is very excited to start working on the new manuscripts. “I’m very happy with what we picked, and I’m really excited to put them out there and start talking about them. I’ve been wanting to talk about the new books to people for a while!”

Come back again next week for another Meet the Staff!
